Marking a significant milestone in the history of the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds, Register William P. O’Donnell today announced the Registry was the first to electronically record Land Court documents in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
In announcing the milestone, Register O’Donnell stated, “April 12, 2017 was the first day a document was recorded electronically in the Land Court. Electronic recording came about with the recent passage of legislation that just went into effect eliminating the need to retain original land court documents.”
Norfolk County property is made up of approximately 80% recorded land and 20% registered land or “Land Court section.” “Since 2010,” noted O’Donnell, “the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds has been electronically recording recorded land documents. Our experience of being up to the challenge of efficiently recording documents electronically on the recorded land side prepared us to record electronically in our Land Court.”
Electronic recording is part of an ongoing effort by the Norfolk Registry of Deeds to leverage cutting edge technology to record land documents, both recorded land and now registered land or Land Court in a secure, efficient manner. “Electronic recording,” stated O’Donnell, “is another example of the modernization initiatives that have been implemented at the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds. These initiatives have placed an emphasis on efficiency and good customer service.”
Concluding his remarks, Register O’Donnell stated, “Electronic recording is a win-win for both the Registry and its institutional users. The productivity gains that result from electronic recording benefit the homeowners and taxpayers of Norfolk County by allowing us to work smarter and more efficiently.”
