History Comes Alive

History Comes Alive Land Record Project

Since its establishment in 1793, the Norfolk County Registry of Deeds has evolved from the days of scriveners with quill pens to the modern era of computers and advanced document imaging. A significant milestone in this journey was the transcription of handwritten land documents dating from 1793 to 1900. This ambitious project, undertaken in collaboration with our vendor, aimed to create accurate, readable versions of historical land records while maintaining the integrity of the originals.

Transcribing these documents was no small feat—recorded land documents of Old English prose in cursive penmanship were carefully translated into digital text. While every effort was made to ensure accuracy, these transcriptions are intended as a convenient reference for Registry users rather than legally binding records. For official documentation, users should always refer to the scanned images of the original documents.
